| - Mexico's Pato O'Ward won the second race of a weekend IndyCar Series doubleheader, capturing Sunday's Detroit Grand Prix by overtaking Josef Newgarden with just three laps left at the Belle Isle Park track. O'Ward seized the Series points lead with a stellar drive, becoming the first two-time winner this season after the first seven races produced different winners. He also won the XPEL 375 at Texas Motor Speedway in early May. Starting from the 16th position, O'Ward took the checkered flag in his Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet by 6.759 secs over a 2.35-mile, 14-turn temporary road course. O'Ward leads the championship by one point over Alex Palou, who finished third in the American Legion Honda car. Sunday's event marked the halfway stage of the 16-event IndyCar campaign. On Saturday, Sweden's Marcus Ericsson won his first IndyCar race holding off Dutchman Rinus VeeKay for the victory. O'Ward finished third on Saturday. O'Ward dedicated his win to teammate Felix Rosenqvist, who had to skip Sunday's race because of a heavy crash in race one. "I talked to Felix this morning, and the important thing is that he's OK, but I told him, 'I'm going to win it for you'," O'Ward said. Colton Herta finished fourth. Graham Rahal placed fifth for the second day in a row, while Ericsson finished ninth. gph/pb
