  • A Spanish court has reopened a probe into accusations of crimes against humanity lodged against the leader of the Western Sahara movement, whose hospitalisation in Spain has sparked tensions between Madrid and Rabat. Brahim Ghali, who leads the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, has since mid April been treated for Covid-19 at a hospital in Logrono in northern Spain, angering Rabat as Madrid grapples with a surge in migrants from Morocco at its north African enclave of Ceuta. Ghali's presence in Spain already led Spain's high court to summon him to appear on June 1 to answer allegations of torture made by Polisario Front dissidents. The court has now reopened a separate probe into accusations of crimes against humanity made by the Spain-based Sahrawi Association for the Defence of Human Rights (ASADEDH), judicial sources told AFP on Tuesday. The group alleges dissident members of the Western Sahara independence movement were held in camps in Algeria against their will where they underwent torture and in some cases were killed. Algeria is home to Polisario fighters and Sahrawi refugee camps. The court reopened the case because of Ghali's presence in Spain and because police were able to formally identify him, the judicial sources said. The court will now decide whether it will summon Ghali for questioning. The Algeria-backed Polisario Front has long fought for Western Sahara's independence from Morocco. A desert region the size of Britain, it was a Spanish colony until 1975. After it emerged that Ghali was being treated in Spain, Morocco's foreign ministry warned of repercussions for ties between the two countries. Against this backdrop some 8,000 migrants have since Monday swum or used tiny inflatable boats to cross unimpeded into the tiny territory of Ceuta from neighbouring Morocco, sparking a crisis for Madrid. avl/ds/nrh
