  • The worldwide number of officially confirmed fatalities from the novel coronavirus rose to 33,244 on Sunday, according to a tally compiled by AFP at 1900 GMT from official sources. More than two-thirds of the deaths from coronavirus have been recorded in Europe. Over 697,750 declared cases have been registered in 183 countries and territories since the epidemic first emerged in China in December. Of these cases, at least 137,900 are now considered recovered. The tallies, using data collected by AFP offices from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), likely reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections. Many countries are only testing cases that require hospitalisation. The countries that announced the most deaths over the last 24 hours were Spain, with 838, Italy, with 756, and the United States with 460. Italy, which recorded its first coronavirus death at the end of February, has to date declared 10,779 fatalities, with 97,689 infections and 13,030 people recovered. Italy and Spain both now have more officially declared deaths than China's toll. China -- excluding Hong Kong and Macau -- has to date declared 3,300 deaths and 81,439 cases, with 75,448 recoveries. It recorded five new deaths over the past 24 hours. The other worst-hit countries are Iran with 2,640 deaths and 38,309 cases, and France with 2,606 deaths and 40,174 cases. The United States has the highest number of infected people with 132,637 diagnosed cases, 2,351 deaths and 2,612 recoveries. Cases there have soared from 41,511 on Monday, making it the country with the fastest progression rate. Since 1900 GMT Saturday, Bolivia, Mali, New Zealand Syria and Uruguay have announced their first deaths. Europe has listed 382,943 cases and 23,864 deaths to date, Asia 105,573 cases and 3,792 deaths, the Middle East 47,310 cases and 2,727 deaths, the US and Canada together 138,880 cases with 2,414 deaths, Latin America and the Caribbean 13,939 cases with 287 deaths, Africa 4,569 cases with 142 deaths and Oceania 4,537 cases with 18 deaths. bur-vg/aud/jj/pvh
