  • China on Tuesday rejected a US bid to extend an arms embargo on Iran and said that Washington could not legally bring back UN sanctions. "Having quit the JCPOA, the US is no longer a participant and has no right to trigger a snapback at the Security Council," Chinese envoy Zhang Jun told a Security Council session, referring to the 2015 nuclear deal by its acronym. President Donald Trump's administration pulled out of the accord two years ago but has argued that the United States can still reimpose sanctions through the United Nations as it was listed as a participant in a 2015 Security Council resolution when Barack Obama was president. sct/ft
