| - Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis: Spain becomes the first European Union nation to surpass a million coronavirus infections, as the Madrid government mulls fresh restrictions to curb the spread of the disease. The country has recorded 16,973 cases of Covid-19 over the past 24 hours, the health ministry says, taking the total to 1,005,295 since its first case was diagnosed on January 31 in the Canary Islands. The virus has claimed at least 1,126,471 lives worldwide since it first emerged in China late last year, according to an AFP tally Wednesday, based on official sources. At least 40,856,217 cases have been registered across the globe. The United States is the worst-affected country with 221,083 deaths, followed by Brazil with 154,837, India with 115,914, Mexico with 86,993 and Britain with 43,967. More than a million people in northern England will be banned from mixing with other households under tougher new rules announced by government minister Robert Jenrick. The county of South Yorkshire, which includes the city of Sheffield, will enter into "very high alert" restrictions from 2301 GMT on Friday. The decision will affect around 1.4 million people, meaning that 7.3 million people -- or 13 percent of England's population -- will now be living under the toughest restrictions. Ireland braces for the start of a second nationwide lockdown, with measures coming into effect from midnight, to last six weeks. All citizens are asked to remain at home, with a strict five-kilometre (three-mile) travel limit, while bars and restaurants will be limited to takeaway service only. A ban on visits between households has also been extended, but unlike the first lockdown in March, schools will remain open. The European Union has taken Canada, Georgia and Tunisia from its list of countries exempt from its coronavirus travel ban because of rising case numbers, European sources say. To slow the epidemic, the EU has advised members to ban travellers arriving from outside the bloc unless they come from a short list of countries deemed safer than Europe. The Czech government says it will curb movement and close all retail stores except food shops, drugstores and pharmacies to battle a huge spike in cases. Measures will begin Thursday morning and last until November 3. German Health Minister Jens Spahn has tested positive for coronavirus, his ministry says, as the country battles a spike in new cases. Spahn, a chief ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel and an architect of the government's response to the pandemic, has gone into isolation at home with "cold symptoms", according to the ministry. Dutch King Willem-Alexander says the Dutch royal family regret going on holiday despite a partial coronavirus lockdown. The Dutch king and queen cut short a holiday to their luxury home in Greece on Saturday, a day after departing from Amsterdam on a government jet, following a storm of public indignation. Amazon says it will extend the option of working from home for many of its employees until mid-2021 as part of its response to the Covid-19 pandemic. burs-eab-jmy/jxb
