  • Troubled eight-year veteran receiver Josh Gordon, serving an indefinite ban for his fifth violation of the NFL's performance-enhancing drugs and substance abuse policy, has asked for yet another chance. The 29-year-old receiver, who helped New England's championship run to last year's Super Bowl, has submitted paperwork to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell seeking reinstatement, according to an NFL website posting. Gordon has been conducting workouts in Seattle hoping he could return to the NFL in time for training camps scheduled for next month. Last December, Gordon was suspended indefinitely for his latest NFL drug policy violation while with Seattle, having joind the Seahawks after being waived by New England earlier in the campaign. Adam Kenner, an attorney for Gordon, told the NFL Network that his client lapsed back into drugs following the death of his brother. "That set him back, but since that time, he has realized how important it is for him to take the right steps, do what's proper, and understand how to manage these issues," Kenner said. "He has installed the right team around him to make sure he's on the right path. He understands he has been given every chance. He looks forward to making the most of this." Gordon began his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns in 2012, was hit was a two-game substance abuse ban in 2013 and suspended 10 games for violating the same rule in the 2014 campaign after an arrest for impaired driving. He missed the entire 2015 season for a substance abuse ban, applied for reinstatement in 2016 and was rejected, missing that entire season and going to a rehabilitation facility before applying again in March 2017. Gordon was rejected in May but received approval in November on a conditional basis and played five games for Cleveland. Gordon lasted only one game for the Browns in the 2018 season before he was traded to New England after a violation of team policy. He played 11 games for the Patriots before being suspended for a violation of his conditional reinstatement from 2017 -- missing New England's 13-3 Super Bowl victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Goodell reinstated Gordon last August and he started the season for the Patriots before being dropped in late October and picked up by Seattle, where he played five games before his latest ban was imposed. In only 63 of a possible 128 games over his eight seasons, Gordon has caught 247 passes for 4,252 yards and 20 touchdowns. js/rcw
