  • Senegalese gendarmes have arrested the father of a 15-year-old boy who died at sea while trying to migrate to Europe, an official with knowledge of the case said Wednesday. The official in the West African state said that the father -- whose identity is unknown -- paid a smuggler the equivalent of 380 euros ($450) to take his son to Spain. Another contact was then meant to take the teen to Italy to enrol in a football training centre. Nicknamed Doudou, the boy boarded a traditional wooden vessel in mid-October for Spain's Canary Islands, according to the official, but he died en route. Local press reported him as dying after an illness and being thrown overboard. His tragic fate has attracted attention in Senegal, which has recently seen an increase of migrants trying to reach Europe via a perilous ocean crossing to the Canary Islands. The archipelago lies more than 100 kilometres (60 miles) from the coast of Africa at its closest point, and the passage is typically made in wooden boats that are usually crammed and poorly maintained. Migrants have attempted the Atlantic route more and more as the authorities have clamped down on crossing from Libya to Europe. The International Organization for Migration said that more than 140 people died last month when a boat attempting the crossing sank off Senegal. The government disputes those numbers, however. Senegal's police said in a statement on Wednesday that authorities have intercepted over 1,500 migrants in recent days. mrb/lal/sba/eml/ach
