  • The French sports ministry on Friday announced an inquiry to understand how a coach dismissed by the French Football Federation (FFF) over text messages he sent to minors continued to work with young players. The investigation was opened following articles published in French sports daily newspaper L'Equipe and the New York Times chronicling the coach's career and behaviour. The FFF told AFP that the coach was dismissed from the national training centre (INF) in Clairefontaine "for misconduct in June 2012" after bosses learned of an inappropriate text message. The case never went to court. "The parents of the adolescent did not file a complaint and none of the evidence gathered during the investigations justified a report from the Federation to the judicial authorities, as the facts mentioned could not characterise as a criminal offence," said the FFF. The New York Times reported that some parents of boys who received amorous messages from the coach opted not to take legal action court because they were afraid of harming the careers of the youngsters. A former INF manager told the New York Times "they were love messages, totally inadmissible vis-a-vis a child." Another told L'Equipe that they were "bizarre" and "unacceptable." Despite losing his job, the individual kept his coaching licence and found posts with clubs in the southeast of France. The FFF said it can only take away a licence in the event of "a criminal conviction" in the courts or if an individual is found guilty of a breach of rules by a sports tribunal. The coach worked for a now defunct club in the Drome. The public prosecutor's office in Privas in the neighbouring Ardeche confirmed to AFP that it investigated suspicions of sexual assault on a minor between 2016 and 2018 while the man was working for the Drome club. In 2019 the coach moved to a club in La Voulte-sur-Rhone in the Ardeche Yves Jacquier, president of the FC Rhone Vallees, said he had been "partially" warned by the Drome club, "several months" after the coach was hired because "he weighed boys wearing only their pants". "We took precautions, we never left him alone with the children and we warned him. We are currently interviewing children and parents but to date we have not found any behavioural abnormalities", Jacquier said, adding that a they had started a "separation process" with the coach. ag-jta-dec/pb/dmc
