  • A Brazilian court ruled Wednesday that far-right President Jair Bolsonaro's administration can name a controversial figure who denies the existence of racial discrimination in the country to lead the government institute for Afro-Brazilian culture. The ruling by the Superior Court of Justice overturns a lower court's decision to block the appointment of Sergio Camargo, a self-described "right-wing black," to head the Palmares Cultural Foundation, the federal body responsible for preserving and promoting African heritage in Brazil. Former culture secretary Roberto Alvim -- a controversial figure himself -- named Camargo to the post in November. But the lower court ruled Camargo's past statements "offend the very population (the foundation) is supposed to protect." Camargo, a journalist by training, has said that slavery was "beneficial for people of African descent," denied that "real racism" exists in Brazil, and called black Brazilians "imbeciles who have been misinformed by the left." He also said that Rio de Janeiro city councilwoman Marielle Franco "needs to die, because it's the only way she'll stop haranguing us." Franco, an outspoken black activist, was murdered in 2018 drawing international condemnation. Bolsonaro's government appealed the lower-court ruling and won at the Superior Court of Justice, Brazil's highest appeals court for non-constitutional matters. Chief Justice Joao Otavio de Noronha ruled the courts do not have the right to censor government appointees, even if some consider their opinions "excessive." Reacting on Twitter, Camargo called it a "great day" and a "defeat for left-wing racists." Alvim named Camargo to the post shortly before he too was engulfed in controversy for paraphrasing a speech by Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. Alvim was forced to resign last month over the episode. He is set to be replaced as culture secretary by actress and soap opera star Regina Duarte, who will now have to decide whether to go ahead with Camargo's appointment. pr/jhb/it
