  • Opposition leader Juan Guaido on Friday accused Venezuela's government of lying about the country's lack of coronavirus vaccines, denying regime claims that sanctions are to blame. The government claimed on Wednesday that it would have already purchased the 30 million vaccines it needs but for economic sanctions, led by the United States. "I won't tire myself out repeating it... faced with the official lie about the externalisation of responsibilities: (President) Nicolas Maduro is the only person responsible" for the lack of vaccines, Guaido told a press conference in the capital Caracas. "On December 29 they said they had bought 10 million Sputnik vaccines. Now they say (foreign based) funds are blocked... they're contradicting themselves." On Wednesday, Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza told AFP: "If Venezuela did not have its resources blocked we would have been able to buy the 30 million vaccines the country needs three months ago." He said the contract with Russia for the Sputnik V vaccine was due to be paid in instalments. Venezuela has received 250,000 Sputnik V vaccine doses to date, and half-a-million from China's Sinopharm. Millions of dollars of Venezuelan money have been frozen in US bank accounts and control handed to Guaido. The US is one of more than 50 countries not to have recognized Maduro's controversial re-election in 2018, backing instead Guaido's claim to be acting president. Guaido last month said he would allocate $30 million in the frozen funds towards vaccinations in Venezuela. Like the rest of South America, the country is battling a harsh new pandemic wave fueled, authorities say, by more infectious virus variants from Brazil. Officially, the country of 30 million has had 165,000 cases and some 1,700 deaths, but observer groups such as Human Rights Watch question the numbers, which they say are likely vastly underestimated. Guaido, appearing for the first time in public since recovering from Covid-19, hit out at the "completely false numbers of the dictatorship." pgf/jb/mm/bc/ft
