"What we know so far is that the headteacher and some 28 teachers have been transferred elsewhere out of their own safety and the school has been temporarily closed," he said. Machinga is a town with one of the largest Muslim populations anywhere in Malawi. President Lazarus Chakwera's special advisor on religious affairs Brian Kamwendo told AFP that his office will speak to both the Muslim and Christian communities in the area. "This is so sad, especially coming from the faith community and it brings in a lot of fear to our stakeholders, especially our teachers who are providing equitable education to our children," he said. Police are investigating who was behind the fire. Although religious conflict is rare in Malawi, the arson attack is the latest in a string of disputes that have flared in recent years in the country's east over the wearing of the hijab. Last year, some Christian schools prescribed dress codes for uniforms that all but disallowed female students from wearing the head covering. Anglicans and Muslims in fell out in the Balaka district, with four Anglican primary schools temporarily shut for eight weeks due to the standoff. str/sn/tgb
