  • Pole-sitter Colton Herta won Sunday's second Indy 200 in a double-header weekend at Mid-Ohio, leading the first Andretti Racing podium sweep in 15 years. The 20-year-old American dominated, leading 57 of 75 laps over the 2.26-mile, 13-turn road course at Lexington, Ohio, for his first win of the year and the third of his career. "I'm so happy," Herta said. "We've been knocking on the door almost every week. We've had the pace. Something has gone wrong. But we finally put it all together." Andretti Racing had managed only two podium spots all season until Sunday. "It's so huge," team owner Michael Andretti said. "After the way things have been going for us, 1-2-3, this is huge for us." Fellow Americans Alexander Rossi and Ryan Hunter-Reay were second and third respectively to complete the first Andretti podium sweep since the 2005 opener on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. "It's very cool," Rossi said. "It has been a tough year for us. We're really trying to build a good foundation for next year and we're doing that." "It was nice to have a day with no hiccups," added Hunter-Reay. "The team needed it." Herta, whose father Bryan was also an IndyCar driver, became the youngest winner in series history last year at age 18 when he took the checkered flag at Austin, Texas. He also won last year at Leguna Seca. American Graham Rahal was fourth with Sweden's Marcus Ericsson fifth. Season points leader Scott Dixon of New Zealand, chasing a sixth career series crown, saw his edge over second place American Josef Newgarden shrink from 76 to 72 points with three races remaining in the campaign. Dixon, a record six-time Mid-Ohio winner, started third but spun on lap 22 and fell to 20th before battling back to finish 10th. "We tried to have the tires better for longer in the run," Dixon said. "Our pressures were low. I got a little aggressive. "Total rookie mistake. It was such a stupid mistake I shouldnt have made. The car was good. I was able to move back up. But it should have been an easy points gain." Instead, his margin slid to 456-384 over defending champion Newgarden. Three of 14 races remain on the IndyCar schedule -- back-to-back events on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course October 2-3 and the October 25 St. Petersburg finale. The Mid-Ohio races were postponed from August due to the coronavirus pandemic that disrupted the schedule and delayed the season's start until June. State officials last week approved a reduced capacity of 6,000 spectators for each race. js/rcw
