A Serbian man convicted in Italy of two murders went on trial in Spain on Monday under tight security for the slaying in 2017 of two police officers and a rancher. Considered extremely dangerous, Norbert Feher -- nicknamed "Igor the Russian" by the media -- was held in a glass box during proceedings at a court in Teruel in the eastern region of Aragon. Prosecutors are seeking life imprisonment for Feher, who is accused of shooting dead a rancher in a rural area of Aragon as well as two Guardia Civil officers who were investigating that murder. He assaulted four prison officers on Sunday "with a sharp piece of tile" just before his transfer from a prison in Palencia in the northwest to Teruel for the trial, the Professional Association of Prison Officers (APFP) said in a statement. A Spanish court in January 2020 sentenced Feher to 21 years in jail for two counts of attempted murder for having shot at two men in a rural area near Teruel in December 2017 just before his arrest. An Italian court sentenced him in absentia for the slayings of a barman and a guard in April 2017 in Italy's northern region of Emilia Romagna. du/ds/txw
