Six years of conflict has left more than 1,400 people dead and displaced more than one million in a country in which vast swathes of territory are largely inaccessible. On January 15, 30 people, mainly Westerners, are killed and 71 injured in a jihadist raid on Ouagadougou's Hotel Splendid, popular with foreigners, and the Cappuccino restaurant. Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) said it carried out what was the first attack of its kind in the country. On March 2, 2018, simultaneous downtown attacks deploying a booby-trapped car for the first time targeted army headquarters and the French embassy, killing eight soldiers and injuring 85 people. Al-Qaeda offshoot the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM) claimed responsibility. On August 19, 2019, 24 soldiers are killed in an attack on a military base in the northern town of Koutougou near the border with Mali. On November 6, at least 38 people are killed and 63 injured in an attack on a convoy transporting workers at a Canadian-run goldmine in the eastern town of Boungo. On December 24, 35 civilians and seven soldiers are killed when 200 heavily armed insurgents attack a military base and the town of Arbinda on the border with Mali. On January 25, 2020, 39 people are killed in a massacre at a market in the northern village of Silgadji, where the men were executed after first being separated from the women. The bloodshed comes less than a week after 36 die in attacks on the villages of Nagraogo and Alamou in central northern Sanmatenga province. On April 26, 2021, two Spanish journalists and the Irish head of an NGO are executed as they accompany an anti-poaching patrol which is attacked in the east of the country. On May 3, at least 25 civilians are killed in a raid on the eastern village of Kodyel. On Friday night, at least 160 civilians, including around 20 children, are killed in the northern town of Solhan by suspected jihadists in the bloodiest such attack Burkina Faso has known to date. ang/cds/gd
