schema:articleBody	Spain's Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a 2018 graft conviction against the conservative Popular Party which led to the ouster of former prime minister Mariano Rajoy's government. The National Court, which handles major criminal cases, in May 2018 convicted the Popular Party (PP) of having benefitted from illegal funds during a mega trial in which 29 former party officials, businessmen and their spouses were jailed. The so-called Gurtel case centred on a vast system of bribes given to former PP officials in exchange for juicy public contracts between 1999 and 2005 in various regions including Madrid. It was the first time that a ruling party in Spain had been found guilty in court and the PP appealed the sentence. But the Supreme Court upheld the lower court ruling, finding that the PP had in fact benefitted from "an authentic and efficient corruption system". The court also upheld most of the other sentences handed down against the main defendants, although it reduced a 29-year prison term handed down to former PP treasurer Luis Barcenas by four years. A week after the 2018 verdict, Rajoy was voted out of office in a closely fought no-confidence motion in parliament and replaced by Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez who had filed the motion and remains in power. avl/ds/tgb
