  • At least 14 Palestinians and three Israeli police officers were hurt Friday in clashes at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque compound, Palestinian medics and Israeli police said, in rare confrontations at Islam's third-holiest site. Police spokesman Waseem Bader told AFP officers used force to disperse "violent disturbances" after "rioters" threw stones, bottles and other objects at officers. The Palestinian Red Crescent said at least 14 Palestinians were wounded, many hit in the head and eyes by rubber bullets fired by Israeli police. Palestinian media outlets showed rows of Israeli security forces lined up in the area outside the mosque, while an AFP correspondent saw smoke rising from the area. Bader said police made an unspecified number of arrests and that three officers were wounded. The clash began at the end of the last Friday prayers during the holy fasting month of Ramadan, and comes amid an escalation in violence between Israelis and Palestinians in the Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank. Earlier Friday, Israeli border police said they killed two Palestinians and wounded a third when the three attacked officers with rifles in the West Bank. On Sunday, a 19-year-old Israeli man was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting in the northern West Bank. Days later, Israeli forces killed a 16-year-old Palestinian near Nablus.
