  • Hundreds of people who lost loved ones in the pandemic will attend a funeral mass at Seville Cathedral on Thursday in one of the largest public gatherings in Spain since the lockdown. The mass, starting at 8:00 pm (1800 GMT), will be celebrated by Archbishop Juan José Asenjo Pelegrina and include a performance of Mozart's Requiem by a nearly 90-strong choir and orchestra. Spain went into lockdown in mid-March to slow the spread of the virus that has killed more than 27,000 people, and is due to wrap up a 10-day mourning period on Friday. But with the epidemic now well under control, the restrictions have been gradually eased in a phased rollback. Located in the southern Andalucia region, Seville is currently in phase two under which places of worship can expand occupancy to 50 percent of normal capacity. In a video invitation, the archbishop said the cathedral had "600 places" at the mass for the families of the victims alongside city and local government officials, military personnel, academics and judges. The vast cathedral, a World Heritage Site where Christopher Columbus is buried, covers more than 11,000 square metres and the mass is being held in strict safety conditions, the musical director told AFP. "It's a huge space. The cathedral has a capacity of 4,000 people but they have only put in 600 seats," said José Carlos Carmona who directs the Seville symphony orchestra and the university choir. He said a team of professionals had created a detailed plan with "very clear interpersonal distances between each member of the orchestra and the choir" to keep within the guidelines. Performing together for the first time in three months, four soloists would sing alongside a choir of 53 who would be accompanied by 27 musicians. "The orchestra will play wearing masks, except for those playing wind instruments, and the choir will sing without masks although they will have them with them," he explained. Cathedral officials took all the pews, replacing them with well-spaced individual seats placed in the naves, Carmona told AFP. All participants are required to wear a mask with hand gel at the entrance. "This is a solemn event which expresses some of Seville's pain but also that of Spain and the rest of the world," he said. hmw/mg/bp
