| - The LPGA's Evian Championship, scheduled to be held in August, has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, organisers said Tuesday. "Due to the situation brought about by the world health crisis, The Evian Championship's organising committee has announced that the 2020 tournament cannot be held this year," they said in a statement. "The ongoing uncertainty concerning the opening of borders, in particular with Asia and the USA, poses a major risk to the organisation of a competition, which in less than eight weeks, has to welcome 120 players from around the world and from over 30 countries." The sporting calendar, organisers continued, did not allow for a rescheduling of the date for the tournament which had already been postponed a few weeks ago from July to August. Sporting events across the globe have been hard hit by the COVID-19 outbreak, with a multitude of tournaments either postponed or cancelled. The US PGA Tour will, however, make its return on Thursday, without spectators but with a star-studded field including the world's top five players, at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas. The European Tour has announced a six-event "UK Swing" to begin next month with the British Masters. lp/jc
