The court in Innsbruck found Baldauf guilty of "serious sports fraud" and handed down the sentence along with a 480-euro ($530) fine and an order to pay 960 euros in compensation to the Austrian Ski Association. Baldauf admitted taking part in blood doping from April 2016 and said he started taking growth hormones from autumn 2017. However, he denied having enriched himself through these actions. Baldauf was arrested in February last year along with fellow Austrian skier Max Hauke and three other athletes at the Nordic Ski World Championships as part of Operation Aderlass -- the German word for "bloodletting". The investigation focussed on doping allegedly revolving around German doctor Mark Schmidt, who was arrested on the same day at his surgery in Erfurt. Both Baldauf and Hauke were later given four-year bans from the sport and in October Hauke was also convicted of serious sports fraud and given a five-month suspended sentence. Baldauf said that another Austrian former cross-country skier, Johannes Duerr, had introduced him to the idea of doping. Duerr "told me what he did and that there was a German doctor", Baldauf said, while adding that Duerr had not directly encouraged him. Duerr himself lifted the lid on a huge multinational doping network when he confessed to doping on German television last year. He now also faces fraud charges from Austrian prosecutors. According to the public prosecutor in Munich, Schmidt is suspected of having facilitated blood doping for at least 21 athletes of eight nationalities and across five different sports.
