Sterling's latest dive saw it touch a six-month low against the euro of 92.33 pence after the European Commission warned the British government "has seriously damaged trust between the EU and the UK" and demanded it abandon efforts to overwrite the Brexit withdrawal agreement. Against the dollar, the pound gave up 1.2 percent to stand at $1.2870. Sterling has lost more than three percent against both the greenback and the pound inside a week. "Sterling took a bit of a kicking as the mood music around this week's Brexit talks took a decided turn for the worse," was the verdict of Markets.com chief markets analyst Neil Wilson. "The EU Commission has come out fighting," added Wilson, suggesting that London's bid to ditch "problem elements" of the withdrawal bill comprised "real brinkmanship" at a time when trust between the two sides is crumbling away. Paul Dales of Capital Economics warned Britain that "the financial markets have woken up with a bang to the possibility" of a no-deal Brexit after the transition period ends on December 31.
