| - AFP's fact-check service debunks misinformation spread online. Here are some of our recent articles about inaccurate claims in the United States: Former US president Donald Trump claimed in an interview with Fox News that his controversial wall on the Mexico border is nearly complete. But US Customs and Border Protection data shows that while 458 miles (737 kilometers) of wall have been completed on the nearly 2,000-mile border, almost 300 miles of planned construction has not yet been finished. Social media posts claim middleweight boxing legend Marvin Hagler's death was linked to a Covid-19 vaccination. But Hagler's wife denied vaccine involvement, his official website says he died of natural causes, and the state medical examiner is not investigating. Social media posts claim a photo shows a 50-year-old man who identifies as a teenager and is playing basketball in a female league, as several US states move to restrict transgender participation in women's sports. This is false; the person in the photo is Gabrielle Ludwig, a trans woman who played on a college varsity team from 2012-2014, according to her former coach and the team webpage. Facebook posts shared thousands of times claim only 9,000 migrants illegally passed through the United States border in 2020 during the administration of former president Donald Trump, while more than 100,000 have entered the country unlawfully under President Joe Biden in 2021. This is false; US Customs and Border Protection recorded more 2020 apprehensions than stated, and less in 2021. 1. 2. 3. 4.
