  • A former British football coach already convicted of being a serial paedophile was on Thursday sentenced to his fifth jail term for offences against children. Former Crewe Alexandra coach Barry Bennell, 66, received another four years imprisonment for nine sexual offences against two boys after earlier pleading guilty. Bennell, a former Manchester City scout, is already serving a 30-year sentence following his 2018 conviction on 50 counts of abusing boys he coached between 1979 and 1991. Police said then that his possible victims could number more than 100. He appeared via videolink from prison for the latest sentencing after pleading guilty at a previous hearing to three counts of buggery and six counts of indecent assault against two victims, who were aged between 11 and 14 at the time of the attacks between 1979 and 1988. Judge Patrick Thompson said the term would be served consecutively to his current prison sentence, meaning a total of 34 years in custody, with an additional two years on licence. Bennell's case has sparked wider allegations of sexual and physical abuse of boys at football clubs across Britain in the 1970s and 1980s, some of whom went on to become heroes of the terraces and international stars. The Crown Prosecution Service said both victims had shown promise as young footballers but had since given up the game because of their experiences, and still struggled to come to terms with the abuse. CPS prosecutor Damion Lloyd called Bennell "a serial predatory paedophile who abused young boys on a regular and relentless basis, often when they were away from home and vulnerable". "These boys had dreams of football stardom and lots of talent. Bennell played on those dreams and that talent to use them for his own twisted sexual gratification," he added. jj/phz/har
