The Cardinals announced Friday they will serve as the host team against an opponent to be announced and on a date to be determined when the full 2020 NFL regular-season schedule is revealed, generally around mid-April. Potential opponents for the Cardinals in Mexico based on the NFL scheduling formula include the Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Rams, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. This year's contest will mark the fifth consecutive season an NFL game has been scheduled at Estadio Azteca, although the 2018 game was moved because of poor field conditions. The eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Chargers 24-17 at Estadio Azteca last year. The last time the Cardinals played in Mexico, they beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-14 before a then-record NFL crowd of 103,467. The relocated Cardinals home game was a condition of Arizona being named to host the 2023 Super Bowl. "Two years ago when the NFL awarded Super Bowl 57 to Arizona... we understood the requirement of hosting an international game before 2023," Cardinals chairman and president Michael Bidwill said in a statement. "We are thrilled to learn that this game will take place at Estadio Azteca, where we received such an enthusiastic reception in 2005. We are extremely grateful for the support we receive from fans in Mexico and look forward to an incredible experience." The Cardinals have also played outside the United States in London in 2017 against the Rams and in pre-season games against Minnesota in London in 1983 and the then-San Diego Chargers in 1976 in Japan. js/dj
