EU officials have warned the timeframe is tight. De Montchalin insisted that Britain could, if necessary, ask to prolong the transition period, though British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has ruled out any such extension. President Emmanuel Macron warned Tuesday that Britain would have to show "flexibility" to meet the deadline it has vowed not to miss. Welcoming visiting Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovi to the Elysee presidential palace, Macron described the timetable as "ambitious" and said the negotiations were likely to be "complex". "The UK wants a short negotiation completed by the end of 2020," he said.
