  • Latvian former Olympic javelin champion Janis Lusis has died at the age of 80 from cancer, the country's athletics federation said Wednesday. Lusis won gold at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, four years after earning bronze at the 1964 Games in Tokyo. He claimed a silver medal in Munich in 1972. Latvian athletes competed as part of the Soviet Union between 1952 and 1988. Lusis twice set the javelin world record and was also a four-time European champion. il-sw/mw/dj
