England and Canberra Raiders backrower John Bateman will undergo further surgery on a troublesome shoulder, ruling him out indefintely from Australia's recently-resumed National Rugby League. The 27-year-old went under the knife in February and had been expected to make his return over the coming weeks before being dealt another blow on Wednesday. "John Bateman will require additional surgery which will keep him sidelined. A time frame on his recovery will be known post-surgery," the club said in a statement. It added that the ex-Bradford and Wigan star -- voted last year's best second-row forward in the NRL -- was expected to make a full recovery and be back on the field this season. "I'm gutted to be having surgery again but it's what's best for me and the team and to help me get back on the field as soon as possible," said Bateman. His absence is a headache for Canberra, seen as one of the favourites for the 20-round abbreviated tournament which resumed last week after a 67-day coronavirus-enforced shutdown. The Raiders currently sit second on the 16-team ladder alongside the Parramatta Els, with three wins from three. mp/dm/dh
