  • The Czech foreign ministry summoned Moscow's ambassador on Monday to demand compensation for fatal explosions at an ammunition depot in 2014 that allegedly involved two Russian spies. The allegations published in April led to the mutual expulsion of dozens of diplomats and other embassy staff and plunged bilateral ties to their lowest level in decades. Moscow later labelled the Czech Republic as "an unfriendly state" that has "carried out unfriendly actions" against Russia. "Deputy Foreign Minister Martin Smolek... summoned Russian ambassador Alexander Zmeyevski on Monday," the ministry said in a statement. Smolek "handed a diplomatic note to the Russian ambassador demanding full compensation for damages" caused by the two explosions at the depot near the eastern village of Vrbetice. The blasts killed two local workers and also caused extensive material damage. The foreign ministry did not specify the sum in its statement. Prague said it held Moscow responsible for its involvement in the blasts and requested that the two sides start talks on the matter. Smolek also told Zmeyevski that putting the Czech Republic on the list of "unfriendly states" was a violation of international law and called on Moscow to cancel the move. The two agents of Russia's GRU military secret service suspected of orchestrating the Vrbetice blasts are the same ones suspected of poisoning former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, England, in 2018. Media said the explosions were supposed to have occurred outside the depot to destroy arms owned by a Bulgarian dealer and possibly destined for Ukraine. Moscow's relations with the West have been deteriorating since it annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and backed rebels in a conflict with Ukrainian forces in the east of the country. frj/amj/bp
