  • Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis: US President Donald Trump is experiencing "mild symptoms" of Covid-19, his chief of staff says, in a bombshell a month before a tense US election which has been overshadowed by the leader's handling of the pandemic. The positive diagnosis means Trump's campaign events ahead of the November 3 election will be held virtually or postponed, his campaign manager says. Trump's wife Melania, who has also tested positive, tweets that she is "overall feeling good", while Vice President Mike Pence, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo all say they have tested negative. Trump's Democratic presidential challenger Joe Biden says he has tested negative for Covid-19, three days after his acrimonious television debate with Trump. The 77-year-old former vice president, who is currently leading Trump in opinion polls, opts to maintain a scheduled trip to Michigan, a key battleground state in his campaign to unseat the Republican incumbent. By 1100 GMT Friday the coronavirus pandemic had killed at least 1,024,093 people around the world since emerging in China in late 2019, according to an AFP tally based on official sources. More than 34.3 million cases have been officially diagnosed. The United States has suffered the most deaths, with 207,816, followed by Brazil with 144,680, India with 99,773, Mexico with 78,078, and Britain with 42,202. The Spanish capital Madrid goes into a partial lockdown late on Friday that will cut it off from the rest of the country. The new restrictions, which will also apply to nine other nearby towns where infection rates are high, will mean people are only allowed to leave the area for work, school or medical and legal reasons. Although Madrid's regional leaders have agreed to implement the restrictions, they strongly oppose the closure, filing an appeal at the National Court to challenge its legality. Trials on the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University have resumed in Japan but not the United States, where the pharmaceutical giant is working with regulators. Trials began at the end of August and group head Pascal Soriot said last month that the vaccine could still be ready by the end of the year, despite being temporarily halted. South African soldiers deployed to enforce one of the world's strictest coronavirus lockdowns have returned to barracks as new infections slowed. The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) says its deployment -- which came to almost 75,000 troops -- had "successfully contributed" to "the national effort to mitigate the spread of Covid-19". burs-acm-jmy/har
