  • Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara, whose controversial decision to run for a third term in October has triggered mass protests, will be officially nominated this weekend, his ruling party said Tuesday. The president had initially ruled out running for re-election, but he reconsidered after his hand-picked successor, prime minister Amadou Gon Coulibaly, died of a heart attack last month. The constitution limits presidents to two terms, but 78-year-old Ouattara -- who has served two five-year terms since 2010 -- and his supporters argue that a 2016 constitutional tweak reset the clock. After Ouattara's re-election announcement earlier this month, mass protests descended into three days of violence in which six people died and a hundred were injured. The president's Houphouetist Rally for Democracy and Peace (RHDP) party said that Ouattara would be nominated as its candidate on Saturday at an event attended by 100,000 people in an Abidjan stadium. "We remain focused on the election, with a record to defend and a project to propose to Ivorians," RHDP spokesman Mamadou Toure told AFP, adding that the latest protests had been a "failure". The government said that during the three days of violence there were a total of 68 arrests for crimes including disturbing public order, inciting violence and destroying property. Ouattara's main rivals in the October 31 vote are 86-year-old former president Henri Konan Bedie, former prime minister Pascal Affi N'Guessan, ex-foreign minister Marcel Amon-Tanoh and ex-education minister Albert Toikeusse Mabri. The run-up to the vote has been volatile, and takes place in the long shadow of political violence following 2010's election in which around 3,000 people died. ck/dl/tgb
