  • At least three people were killed and others seriously injured after a seating area collapsed during the Orthodox Christian celebration of epiphany in the Ethiopian city of Gondar, a hospital official said Monday. The incident occurred just before 8am Monday (0500 GMT) at Fasilides' Bath, named for a 17th-century emperor, during a ceremony for Ethiopia's renowned epiphany celebration, known as Timkat. "We have confirmed three dead," said the official at the University of Gondar Hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a casualty count the hospital was still working to finalise. UNESCO added Timkat to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity last month. Each year more than one million people travel to Gondar from across the country and abroad for the occasion, though no official count is kept, said Aschalew Worku, the city's top tourism official. Thousands typically gather before dawn at Fasilides' Bath to watch worshippers dive into the holy water to commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. Hundreds had been sitting on a tiered wooden structure for hours when it suddenly collapsed in the middle of Monday's ceremony. Witnesses fleeing the scene said an untold number were crushed, suggesting the casualty count could rise. The hospital source who confirmed three fatalities said the injured were suffering from fractures and internal bleeding. Emergency vehicles struggled to part the crowd to enter the site and take victims to the hospital. Once the site was cleared, however, the festival resumed and lasted until mid-morning. Samuel Baheru, who travelled to Gondar for Timkat from the capital Addis Ababa, said he was outside Fasilides' Bath when the structure collapsed and watched bodies being carried out on stretchers. "We heard a loud noise and what we saw coming out on the stretchers wasn't pleasant. At first I panicked because my wife was inside, but then I found her and we continued with Timkat," he said. Officials declined to comment on the incident. rcb/np/pma
