  • The head of the West African bloc ECOWAS on Monday urged his fellow leaders to take "strong decisions" on Mali, during a video summit on the country's political crisis. "The situation in Mali challenges us," said President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger, who also currently heads the 15-nation bloc. He added that the summit must end on "lasting solutions and strong decisions, capable of guaranteeing the stability of Mali and therefore of the region". He called for the "sacred union of all Malians." The poor Sahel nation has been in the grip of a political crisis for weeks, with a newly resurgent opposition calling mass protests to demand the resignation of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. The latest anti-Keita protest on July 10 spiralled into clashes which left 11 dead -- in the worst bout of political unrest Mali has seen in years. The opposition June 5 Movement has galvanised anger over the president's perceived failure to tackle the dire economy, corruption and Mali's eight-year jihadist revolt. Malians are also incensed at the disputed outcome of long-delayed parliamentary elections in March and April that handed victory to Keita's party. Monday's virtual summit on resolving the tension follows two inconclusive efforts at mediation from ECOWAS this month. Mediators had recommended forming a new government of national unity to appease opposition figures, as well as appointing new judges to the constitutional court. The court is at the centre of much of Mali's recent tension. In April, it tossed out 31 results from the parliamentary elections, benefiting Keita's party and sparking protests. In his opening speech on Monday, Issoufou repeated the need to follow mediators' earlier recommendations. He also warned that failure to resolve the crisis risked chaos in the former French colony of some 20 million people. "Let us not forget that Mali, like the other countries of the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin, is at war," he said. "Terrorism and poverty are the main enemies of the Malian people". bur-siu/eml/ri
