  • These are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis: Ghana and its West African neighbour Ivory Coast become the world's first states to administer vaccines from Covax, a global scheme to procure free Covid jabs for poorer countries. Deliveries of four million doses of the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine begin in the US with all expected to be dispatched by Tuesday, in a development that helps global markets bounce back from last week's slump. As new head Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala takes up her post, the World Trade Organization thrashes out a row over calls by India and South Africa to waive intellectual property rights for Covid-19 vaccines, at a two-day general council. It is unrealistic to think that the world will be done with the Covid-19 pandemic by the end of the year, but it might be possible to reduce hospitalisations and deaths, The World Health Organization's emergencies director Michael Ryan says. Uruguay, the last country in South America to receive delivery of coronavirus vaccines, starts its inoculation campaign with the Chinese CoronaVac shot, with a focus on teachers, soldiers, police and firefighters. Finland activates emergency powers as the government prepares to introduce tougher restrictions, to stem a rising tide of infections. Germany eases some restrictions, with hairdressers reopening for the first time in two and a half months and florists and garden centres allowed to open in certain states such as Bavaria. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announces the easing of some restrictions in force since December, including shortening a weekend curfew and reopening restaurants, in places with lower infection rates. French President Emmanuel Macron says citizens will have to "hold out" for another "four to six weeks" before coronavirus curbs can be eased, as the authorities mull tighter restrictions for 20 of the country's departments. The European Union executive says it will propose rules for a vaccine digital "green pass" this month, which would aim to provide proof both of vaccination and of Covid test results. United Airlines reaches an agreement to purchase 25 more Boeing 737 MAX aircraft for delivery in 2023, in a sign of an expected post-coronavirus travel industry recovery. Israel's top court rules the government must curb its use of the domestic spy agency Shin Bet to track coronavirus infections, saying "draconian" surveillance is undemocratic. Close to two out of three Russians -- 64 percent -- believe that the coronavirus is a man-made biological weapon, according to a survey by the independent Levada Centre. The virus has killed at least 2,531,448 people since it emerged in China in December 2019, according to an AFP tally compiled from official sources. The US is the worst-affected country with 513,092 deaths, followed by Brazil (254,942), Mexico (185,715), India (157,157) and the UK (122,849). burs-nrh-jmy/ach
