  • The Reverend Al Sharpton, the veteran US civil rights leader, is to deliver the eulogy on Thursday at the funeral of Daunte Wright, a young Black man killed by a policewoman in Minneapolis during the trial of the former police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd. Members of the Floyd family are expected to be among the mourners attending Wright's funeral service at Shiloh Temple International Ministries in Minneapolis. Wright, 20, was shot dead during a traffic stop in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center on April 11 by a policewoman who apparently confused her handgun for her Taser. Kim Potter, who is white, resigned from the Brooklyn Center police force after the shooting and has been charged with second-degree manslaughter. Wright's shooting took place during the already tense atmosphere of the trial of former police office Derek Chauvin, who was convicted on Tuesday of Floyd's murder. Chauvin was seen on video kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes during the May 25, 2020 arrest of the 46-year-old African-American man. The video of Floyd's death sparked protests against racial injustice and police brutality across the United States and around the world. A jury convicted Chauvin of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter. He is to be sentenced in June. Sharpton also delivered the eulogy for Floyd at his funeral in Houston, Texas, in June of last year. Members of the Floyd family are expected to attend Wright's funeral along with the veteran civil rights leader the Reverend Jesse Jackson and Ben Crump, an attorney who represents the Wright and Floyd families. Hundreds of mourners attended a public viewing on Wednesday at Shiloh Temple of Wright's open casket covered with red roses. The US Justice Department announced Wednesday that it was conducting a probe into the Minneapolis police to determine whether the department systematically uses excessive force. rle-cyj/cl
