  • Air traffic remained paralysed in Albania Thursday because of a strike by flight controllers protesting wage cuts in the coronavirus-hit industry although a single plane carrying Covid-19 vaccines managed to land. "Tomorrow the situation will return to normal with the resumption of commercial flights," to and from the Balkan country's only international airport, Infrastructure Minister Belinda Balluku said. "Thanks to the efforts of the government, we were able to bring Sinovac vaccines to Albania", Balluku told reporters after a cargo of 100,000 Chinese-made vaccines landed in Tirana. Air traffic controllers are demanding a pay raise after their wages were cut by 62 percent during the last year as the coronavirus pandemic dealt a huge blow to the air travel sector. Police said around 20 controllers were arrested Wednesday in connection with the walkout while the Tirana prosecutor's office opened an investigation for "abuse of power" against those behind the strike. The Balkan nation deployed soldiers late Wednesday in the airport which is of "particular importance for national security", Balluku said. Albanian authorities have not confirmed media reports from Tirana that foreign air traffic controllers have been called in to replace the strikers. The air traffic controllers' strike forced the cancellation of some 30 flights on Wednesday and Thursday. Albania is in the midst of a heated campaign for an April 25 parliamentary election, and Prime Minister Edi Rama accused opposition parties of backing the strike to "block Rinas airport and prevent the delivery of vaccines". "Distance yourselves from those who have pushed you into this crazy game," the prime minister said in a message addressed to the strikers. Albania has so far received about 400,000 doses of Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Sinovac and Sputnik V shots, and authorities hope to immunise significant part of the population by the end of May. bme/mbs/ach
