  • The Visegrad Group of four Central European countries urged Belarus on Wednesday to find a political solution to the crisis amid mass protests against President Alexander Lukashenko. The Czech, Hungarian, Polish and Slovak presidents who belong to the Visegrad Group said in a joint statement that the Belarusian authorities should "open the way for the political solution". They also called on "any foreign actors to refrain from actions that would undermine Belarus's independence and sovereignty" -- a reference to Russia which has promised assistance to Lukashenko. They said an emergency summit of EU leaders on Wednesday should "take all the necessary measures... in order to establish a dialogue between the representatives of Belarusian authorities and the society" and consider "solidarity measures with the people of Belarus". Belarus has been shaken by unprecedented protests against Lukashenko's 26-year rule ever since an August 9 election in which he claimed an overwhelming victory against his rival, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who has since fled to Lithuania. dt/gd
