  • Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis: US President Donald Trump has been hospitalised with Covid-19 after the bombshell news of his positive test result just a month before a tense US election which has been overshadowed by his handling of the pandemic. Trump's press secretary said that medical experts recommended he be hospitalised "for the next few days" and that he was receiving the anti-viral drug remdesivir. "I think I'm doing very well," Trump said in short video released on Twitter just before going to hospital. "We're going to make sure that things work out." The number of corornavirus deaths rises to 100,842 in India, which has the world's third highest toll behind the United States with 207,731 and Brazil on 145,388. Across the world, the virus had killed at least 1,029,593 people since emerging in China in late 2019, according to an AFP tally at 1100 GMT Saturday based on official sources. More than 34.6 million cases have been officially diagnosed. The Spanish capital Madrid woke up Saturday in a partial lockdown that will cut it off from the rest of the country. The new restrictions, which came into force at 10:00 pm Friday and will also apply to nine other nearby towns where infection rates are high, will mean people are only allowed to leave their area for work, school or medical and legal reasons. Although Madrid's regional leaders have agreed to implement the restrictions, they strongly oppose the closure, filing an appeal at the National Court to challenge its legality. Despite surging coronavirus infections in Germany, opponents of measures to stem its spread organised a massive human chain on Saturday on the shores of Lake Constance, which shares a border with Austria and Switzerland. The protesters' goal is to connect the chain across the three countries. Other demonstrations are expected over the weekend, with police planning a "significant deployment" for an anticipated 30,000 people. Tunisian hospitals are struggling to cope with an influx of virus patients due to a lack of staff and resources. "If we don't manage to flatten this curve, which is really going up, we risk being overwhelmed," said Dr Hechmi Louzir, spokesman of the scientific committee for the fight against Covid-19. Researchers in Costa Rica have been experimenting for several weeks on 27 patients with a coronavirus treatment based on horse plasma. Preliminary results suggest the treatment is "very safe", according to the doctor leading the study. Intended to be taken during the onset of the virus, the treatment aims to use equine antibodies to decrease symptoms within four days. burs-jah/cds/dl/bmm
