  • Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis: The US registers a new daily deaths and infections record with 2,239 more fatalities and 200,146 new infections. It remains the worst-affected country with 252,555 deaths since the start of the crisis. South Australia ends its lockdown after a pizza chef lied to tracers about how he contracted the virus. He said he was a customer at a pizzeria -- leading authorities to believe the strain was virulent enough to be transmitted via a takeaway box -- when in fact he worked there. India's cases pass nine million, the world's second-highest tally after the US with many experts suspecting the number is an under-estimate due to low levels of testing. At least 585 new deaths were recorded there in the last 24 hours. Mexico's death toll meanwhile has passed 100,000, becoming the world's fourth country to pass the grim milestone. Overall, the virus has killed at least 1,360,914 people since the outbreak emerged in China last December, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP on Friday. There were 11,100 new deaths and 661,056 new cases recorded worldwide in the previous 24 hours. The second worst-affected country is Brazil with 168,061 deaths followed by India with 131,578, Mexico with 100,104 and the United Kingdom with 53,775. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says vaccines being tested by Pfizer-BioNTech and by Moderna could be approved and granted "conditional authorisation" before the end of December. French Amazon says it is open to delaying its "Black Friday" sale to December after smaller businesses that were forced to lockdown complained they would lose out to the online giant. Japan's Rakuten says it is also prepared to be "flexible" if other firms play along echoing major supermarket chains like Carrefour. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says Spain will have vaccinated "a very substantial part" of its population of 47 million people by mid-2021. Face-to-face meetings between the chief negotiators in Brexit talks are suspended after a member of the EU team tested positive. Resurgent virus cases force a new closure of major museums and the zoo in Washington DC, slamming the brakes on the US capital's limited resumption of normal activity. Senior US defence official Anthony Tata tested positive after meeting last week with Lithuania's defence chief, who later also tested positive for the virus, the Pentagon says. Ninety-year-old Patriarch Irinej, the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, dies of Covid-19 three weeks after his unofficial second-in-command succumbed to the virus. California imposes a curfew across much of the state with a 10:00 pm to 5:00 am stay-at-home order taking effect Saturday. The US Labor Department reports a sharp rise in new jobless, a sign the unemployment crisis could be intensifying as the world's largest economy endures a surge in infections. The World Health Organization says remdesivir -- a costly anti-viral drug taken by Donald Trump when he had Covid-19 -- should not be given to patients with the virus no matter how sick they are because it has "no important effect". Nearly a million people have taken an experimental vaccine developed by Chinese company Sinopharm although the firm has not yet provided any clear clinical evidence of efficacy. bur-nrh/fg/wai
