| - Senegal's justice system on Wednesday granted preliminary release to three activists arrested for "insurrection", prosecutors said, after unrest triggered when opposition figure Ousmane Sonko was arrested on suspicion of rape. The three -- Guy Marius Sagna, Cledor Sene and Assane Diouf -- are expected to be the first of around 30 released in the capital Dakar and elsewhere around the country, according to press reports and the arrested people's lawyers. Political and religious leaders have been trying to tamp down dissatisfaction after the worst unrest in years erupted in early March in Senegal, usually seen as a rare island of stability in western Africa. Riots and looting broke out when Sonko, the main opponent to President Macky Sall, was arrested earlier this month. Accused of rape, he claims the allegations are a plot to knock his 2024 presidential bid off course. Analysts say the arrest unleashed pent-up frustration over Senegal's Covid-19 restrictions and the government's heavy-handed approach to dealing with all opposition. The three men released Wednesday were arrested on February 22 and 23, before the violence broke out. Police accuse them of planning demonstrations in Dakar against court cases targeting Sonko. Charged on February 26 and March 1 with "organising an insurrection movement, causing people to commit crimes and infractions and criminal association", they were then jailed. President Sall responded to the unrest, in which several people died across Senegal, by lifting a coronavirus curfew and saying he had heard the message from the country's youth. Although opponent Sonko has been charged, he too has since been released. Meanwhile religious leaders' interventions helped convince demonstrators to hold off for now. mrb/lal/tgb/dl
