| - Unbeaten American fighter David Benavidez lost his World Boxing Council super middleweight title on the scale Friday, failing to make weight for his Saturday bout against Colombia's Alexis Angulo. The main event will take place as planned in a COVID-19 quarantine bubble at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, but only Angulo can capture the vacated 168-pound (76.2kg) division belt. Benavidez weighed in at 170.75 pounds while Angulo tipped the scale at 167.5 pounds. "I'm very disappointed," Benavidez said. "This is obviously my first time missing weight. Just very disappointed to lose the title on the scale, but I'm still going to win the fight. "I put the blame on myself. It's just the last three pounds wouldn't come off. Maybe not having the proper things I needed like no sauna. I was only able to go to the gym an hour a day since I got here." Benavidez, 22-0 with 19 knockouts, said that the restrictions placed upon him in the virus-protected atmosphere contributed to his failing to make weight. "I didn't think this all the way through," Benavidez said. "Coming in I thought I would have access to more, but I didn't. "Maybe this is a message to all the other fighters who have a little bit of trouble with their weight. It's going to be hard to make the weight if you already have trouble. "If you need a couple extra things like the gym or the sauna, you better come into the bubble already on weight, because it's very hard." Benavidez, 23, became the youngest champion in super middleweight history at age 20 by beating Ronald Gavril in a split decision for the vacant crown in 2017. This would have been his third title defense. Angulo, 36, enters 26-1 with 22 knockouts. js/dj
