  • Fact Check: Viral video of flooded Marina beach is from November 2021 Heavy rains have been battering Chennai for the last few days due to cyclone Mandous, after which the roads are completely waterlogged. A video of a flooded beach with a lot of things submerged in water is going viral as a recent video Heavy rains have been battering Chennai for the last few days due to cyclone Mandous, after which the roads are completely waterlogged. A video of a flooded beach with a lot of things submerged in water is going viral as a recent video. https://www.facebook.com/ https://www.facebook.com/reel/ Fact check: The claim is misleading. Though the video shows Marina beach in Chennai, the video is from November 2021 When we searched the key frames from the video, we found a Facebook reel published in November 2021, showing the flood situation in Chennai. The video was published by ETV Bharat in November 2021, where we can see a flooded beach inundating all things on the shore. The title of the video is Marina beach flooded due to heavy downpours. According to the report by news18.com, heavy rains pounded Chennai and its surrounding suburban areas, following the Indian Meteorological Department predicting a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the likely formation of a low-pressure area. In the wake of the incessant rain, state authorities have ordered schools and colleges in four districts to remain shut for the next two days. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has appealed to the people, who had travelled to their native places from Chennai to celebrate Deepavali, to postpone their travel to the state capital by three days in view of the incessant rains. Another report by skymetweather.com stated that Chennai was ravaged repeatedly by heavy rains, since the time of onset of the northeast monsoon on October 25, 2021. The capital city has been hit thrice in this month between Nov. 6-8, Nov. 10-12, and Nov. 18-19. The city has received 808 mm of rainfall between November 1 and 22, against its monthly normal of 374.4 mm. Chennai has not received such copious rains in the recent past except in 2015. In November, Chennai received more than double the normal in November. Therefore, the viral video is from November 2021 and not recent. The claim is MISLEADING.
