  • Fact Check: No, Imran Khan DIDN'T vote like this in 2024 Pak polls, this is from his good old days! The photo is from 2018. In the 2024 polls, Khan was allowed to vote via postal ballot from the Adiala jail. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The photo is from Pakistan's 2018 by-elections, not the 2024 general elections. Imran Khan voted via postal ballot from Adiala Jail. As votes were being counted in Pakistan following the general elections, a photo of former Prime Minister Imran Khan casting his ballot was widely shared. Allegedly, this photo of Khan was shot inside the Adiala Jail in Islamabad, where he has been languishing since August 2023. “Imran Khan has cast his vote from Adiala Jail, Constituency NA 47 Islamabad,” the caption of such a post. India Today fact check found that the viral photo is from 2018 and shows Khan voting in Islamabad during by-elections in Pakistan. OUR PROBE Reverse searching the viral photo led us to a 2018 Facebook post on the official page of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Khan’s party, dated October 14, 2018. It was captioned: “I just cast my vote, we need your support to continue in our mission for Naya Pakistan ... have you cast your vote?” Using this information, we found a report in the Pakistani daily Dawn, dated October 14, 2018. The report, titled, "In pictures: Pakistan votes in by-elections on 35 constituencies," highlighted that 370 candidates contested in by-elections held in 35 constituencies. The report also featured the viral photo alongside the caption, "Prime Minister Imran Khan casts his vote in Islamabad's NA-53 We also found the same photo in several other news reports from October 2018, thus, confirming that it’s not from the recently held general elections in Pakistan. Imran Khan and other prominent incarcerated political figures, according to a February 8 Dawn report, cast their votes through a postal ballot from Adiala Jail. Other political leaders who voted by mail reportedly included former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid, and former information minister Fawad Chaudhry. Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi, however, was unable to vote. According to Dawn, she was convicted and arrested after the completion of the postal voting process.
