| - On July 11, 2024, Mouse Trap News published the alleged news that a theme park centered around the video game Fortnite was opening at Disney World. The article began:
BREAKING: A Fortnite Theme Park Is Coming to Disney World
Breaking news, a Fortnite theme park is coming to Disney World. This will be a brand-new theme park based on the video game Fortnite. This is part of the new Epic Games and Disney collaboration.
The new theme park will fully immerse guests in the world of Fortnite. Guests will be able to explore some of their favorite locations, meet characters, and ride epic rides. Essentially, the park will be based on the OG Fortnite map. It will include lands like Tilted Towers, Salty Springs, Dusty Depot, and more.
The claim was also posted on the Mouse Trap News TikTok account, where it racked up nearly 80,000 likes and more than 50,000 shares, as of this writing. "This would be the best thing ever," one user commented, to which another responded, "If true this is soooo coooool."
However, this item was not a factual recounting of real-life events. The article originated with Mouse Trap News, a website that describes its output as being humorous or satirical in nature on its "About" webpage, as follows:
Mouse Trap News is the world's best satire and parody site. We write fake stories about Disney Parks stuff. From Disney Park announcements to Disney Hotel and resort news to made-up Disney partnerships, you can be assured that anything you read here is not true, real, or accurate, but it is fun. So technically our slogan The Moused Trusted Name in Disney News isn't true, but we thought it was creative and funny, so we are running with it.
Mouse Trap News was created on a whim to have some fun and write stories about Disney we wish were true. Some Disney sites write deceptive stories for clicks. We write 100% made-up parody and satire stories for your enjoyment. We also hope that Disney sees how much people like some of our stories and decide to actually make one of our stories a reality!
While there are no plans to built a Fortnite attraction at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla., according to a Feb. 7, 2024, news release from The Walt Disney Company, the entertainment corporation has entered into a strategic alliance with Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite, where Disney invested $1.5 billion for an equity stake in the gaming company.
According to Disney, this partnership aims to develop a new gaming and entertainment universe that will feature Disney's franchises including Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and Avatar integrated into the Fortnite platform. So, while Disney has teamed up with Epic Games to create a new gaming experience within the Fortnite universe, this partnership does not include a new Fortnite theme park coming to Disney World, as Mouse Trap News suggested.
For background, here is why we sometimes write about satire/humor.
