  • Fact Check: Shocking video DOESN'T show Hamas militant getting shot in the head This video is from 2014 and shows an Iraqi soldier getting shot in the head by an ISIS sniper. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video is from 2014 and shows an Iraqi soldier who was shot in the head by an ISIS sniper. A shocking video of a soldier falling after being shot in the head has gone viral on social media with many claiming this was a Hamas militant getting shot amid Israel’s ground offensive in the Gaza Strip. An X user wrote, "This Hamas terrorist got tired of firing bullets. So, he took one and slept." Other posts making similar claims can be seen here and here. India Today Fact Check's investigation found that this video is from 2014 and it shows an Iraqi soldier who was shot in the head by an ISIS sniper. Our Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led to a video of a new report shared on Daily Motion nine years ago. This report with Fox News’ logo contained the viral clip. The DailyMotion video was titled, "ISIS sniper shot Iraqi soldier in the middle of his forehead." Subsequently, we ran a keyword search on the internet and found that on October 29, 2014, Turkish news outlet Star.com reported the same in a news article. It said that an Iraqi soldier was shot and killed by an ISIS sniper while another soldier was recording the conflict. The laughing reaction of other Iraqi soldiers standing next to the soldier was also recorded in that video. Other websites like “Sondakika”, “Posta”, “Cumhuriyet” and Turkey’s Ihlas News Agency also reported similar information at the time. The Turkish agency reported that the man who was killed was an Iraqi army lieutenant and that this incident took place in Diyala, a province in northeastern Iraq. Reportedly, more than 30 ISIS militants were killed in the conflict. Thus, it is safe to conclude that, the video is from 2014 and thus, unrelated to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
