  • On Oct. 29, 2024, a photo was posted (archived) to X allegedly showing massive crowds gathered at a rally in Woodstock, New York, for former U.S. President Donald Trump. The caption said police estimated roughly 460,000 people had turned up to support the Republican presidential nominee. As of this writing, the post had amassed more than 235,000 views and more than 2,000 likes. (X user @travisakers) The post sparked mixed reactions online, with one X user remarking: "Lolz. The trees are green. NY is in stick season, so this didn't happen this fall," while another pointed out: "He hasn't even been to Woodstock." "Lot's of folks seem to be missing the joke here," one X user commented, to which the original poster replied: "I feel like I telegraphed the joke in the caption. Sarcasm and reading comprehension is a lost art." In short, the post was not meant to be taken seriously. The photo was captured during the 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Fair in Bethel, New York, and did not show a massive crowd at a Trump rally. Though the original post wasn't labeled satire, the X user subsequently noted that it was a joke, therefore we have rated this claim as labeled satire. Other posts by the X user showed he does not support Trump, validating his statement that the X post in question was meant as a joke. Several similar photos, available on Getty Images and Google Image Search (see screenshot below), show the image in the X post was captured at Woodstock '69. (Google search) The description of the original photograph, available on Getty, read: View Of The Huge Crowd At Woodstock Aerial view taken from a helicopter of the stage and the five hundred thousand strong crowd gathered at the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair in Bethel, New York, August 15 - 17 (and part of the 18th), 1969. (Photo by Barry Z Levine/Getty Images) No reputable news outlets have reported on the former president holding a rally at Woodstock in the build-up to the 2024 election. In 2019, other fact-checking outlets addressed a similar false claim about a photo of Woodstock actually showing a Trump rally. For further reading, we have investigated other claims regarding Trump rallies, such as: - Was 'Confederate Anthem' Played at Trump's Madison Square Garden Rally? - Kid Rock Donated Proceeds From New Single to Family of Victim Killed at Trump Rally? - Trump Supporters Wore Diapers at Rallies? For background, here is why we alert readers to rumors created by sources that call their output humorous or satirical.
