  • In the context of the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, the media of the two countries have engaged in a war of rumors over the alleged death of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported that speculation from various Hebrew-language sources is growing that Netanyahu was killed or injured in the Iranian attack. Rejecting that news, Israel’s Jerusalem Post claimed in a report that the Iranian media is ‘spreading rumors’ of Netanyahu’s death or injury. In this context, a picture has spread on social media showing Netanyahu lying amidst rubble. The picture captures a scene of two members of the Israeli forces trying to rescue him. See posts circulated on Facebook containing the said picture here, here, and here. Fact Check The Rumor Scanner team’s investigation reveals that the circulated picture is not a real picture of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, and the claim of him being killed is also not correct. In reality, a picture created with the help of artificial intelligence technology has been circulated with the discussed claim. Investigating the discussed picture, no evidence supporting the claim that the discussed picture is real was found from any reliable international media source. Observing the circulated picture, inconsistencies are noticed in it, especially in the head and hand areas, which are usually observed in AI-generated pictures. To further confirm whether the circulated picture was created with the help of AI technology, the Rumor Scanner team used Google’s special identification technology ‘SynthID’. Analyzing the picture with SynthID shows that it was created with the help of Google’s AI technology. Besides, after the claim was circulated, pictures and videos of his participation in various meetings were broadcast on Netanyahu’s official X handle and in Israeli media.
