A video showing former United States President Bill Clinton talking about sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's client list is being circulated on social media platforms as a recent incident.
An X (formerly Twitter) subscriber shared the clip with a caption that said, "Bill Clinton has released a statement after learning Pam Bondi is releasing the Epstein Client List Tomorrow."
What are the facts?: The video is actually a deepfake. The original clip could be traced back to August 2020, when Clinton delivered a speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).
Hints in the viral clip: A closer look at the video showed text on the right-hand side that said "meme/satire". At the bottom, we found a different text saying "drefanzo memes".
On searching "drefanzo memes" on Google, we found an X account with the same name.
The same video of Clinton was uploaded on 2 January 2024 with its caption suggesting that it was satire.
Finding the original video: Team WebQoof performed a simple Google Lens search, which directed us to a video posted on the official YouTube channel of NBC News.
It was shared on 19 August 2020 and was titled, "Watch Bill Clinton’s Full Speech At The 2020 DNC | NBC News."
Comparing visuals: We compared a keyframe from the viral clip to the visuals available on the YouTube video and found that both of them are from the same incident.
Clinton's attire as well as the background appears to be the same in both the clips.
What did the detection tool show?: We passed the video through an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool named 'Hive Moderation' to further verify its authenticity.
The tool showed over 99 percent probability of the clip being an AI-generated one.
Conclusion: It is evident that this video of Bill Clinton talking about Epstein's client list is a deepfake.
