  • Fact Check: Neither PM Modi nor Xi Jinping was received by Putin, misleading claim viral Both Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping were received by Russia's Deputy Prime Ministers. Putin was not at the airport to receive either of them. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check Both Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping were received by Russia’s Deputy Prime Ministers. Putin was not at the airport to receive either of them. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Russia on July 8 for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During his visit, PM Modi met with President Putin and addressed members of the Indian diaspora there. However, following PM Modi’s visit, several social media users, including BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, claimed that the Indian PM was not received by the Russian president at the airport, whereas Putin had received the Chinese President Xi Jinping at the airport. Former member of Rajya Sabha and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, while quoting a Times of India tweet, wrote, “Putin did not come to the airport to receive Modi? Putin had received Xi.” This claim was echoed by several users on X and Facebook. An archived version of the post can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the viral claim is misleading. Both Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping were received by Russia’s Deputy Prime Ministers. Putin didn’t receive either of them on their arrival. Our Probe Upon running a keyword search, we found several news reports about PM Modi’s Russia visit published on July 8. According to these reports, PM Modi was in Russia after five years. The reports mentioned that PM Modi was accorded a guard of honour upon his arrival at the airport in Moscow and was received by the First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, Denis Manturov. We then looked into China’s President Xi Jinping’s visit to Russia. According to various news reports, Xi visited Russia in March 2023. A press release on China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website stated that Xi Jinping arrived in Moscow on a special plane to pay a state visit to Russia at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin. It also mentioned that Xi was greeted by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko and other senior Russian officials by the ramp. We also found The Guardian’s video report of Xi’s arrival at Moscow airport, which shows that he was received by Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister. A Hindustan Times report about Modi’s recent visit also mentioned that Manturov, who received PM Modi, is senior to the Deputy Prime Minister who received Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to Russia. Thus, the claim that Putin received Xi Jinping but not PM Modi is misleading. The Russian president did not receive either of them at the airport.
