  • A rumor that singer-songwriter Taylor Swift announced a boycott of red states (those that voted for Donald Trump) after the 2024 U.S. elections circulated widely online in late 2024. Users shared the rumor in the days following former Republican President Donald Trump's November 2024 reelection victory. Swift previously endorsed Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign in September (blue states). For example, a user on X posted (archived), "Taylor Swift has announced her decision to boycott red states in response to Donald Trump's recent re-election." Users made similar posts spreading the same rumor on Facebook, Threads, TikTok and X. One Facebook user remarked of the rumor (archived), "Taylor swift said she might join the boycott of artist [sic] pledging to not do show in red states.. bye bye revenue." Other Facebook users also said (archived) they "hope she goes broke" and pretended (archived) to be upset by the purported news, commenting, "How will we ever survive?" These and other readers seemed to interpret the rumor as a factual recounting of real-life events. However, there was no evidence of Swift announcing a boycott of red states. Rather, the rumor about Swift boycotting red states originated with the SpaceXMania.com network of satire and parody news. For example, on Nov. 9, the owner or owners of SpaceXMania.com posted (archived) the supposed news on their SpaceX Fanclub Facebook page. The page's bio mentions both satire and parody, and also read, "We post SATIRE, nothing on this page is real." The image included with the post showed the caption, "Taylor Swift Announces Boycott of Red States. 'I can't in good conscience perform there.'" Swift never made any such remark. The SpaceXMania-affiliated page The Patriots Network also featured a more popular post (archived) sharing the same rumor. That post received over 137,000 reactions and 12,000 shares, and displayed the text caption, "Taylor Swift Cuts RED STATES from Tour After Massive red wave - SATIRE." An image included with the post also showed a fake Swift quote, reading, "This isn't my America. I won't perform there." Again, Swift never publicly made any such comments. The image displayed several indicators of its satirical origins, including a "rated satire" label and the tiny words, "Nothing on this page is real. If you believe anything we post then you're a potato crop." The image also showed the text, "This is a 'FICTIONAL QUOTE.'" A study of the post's edit history on The Patriots Network's page revealed a page manager edited the text caption to add the word "SATIRE" around 24 hours following its creation — after users widely shared the rumor. Around the same time, a page manager also added a link to an article on SpaceXMania.com displaying the headline, "Taylor Swift Cancels Red State Shows After MASSIVE RED WAVE, 'I Won't Be Performing Here Anymore.'" That article began (archived): Taylor Swift has announced her decision to boycott red states in response to Donald Trump's recent re-election. In an emotional Instagram post, Swift declared she would no longer be performing in states that voted for Trump, explaining that she can't "in good conscience bring her music to places that support divisive and regressive leaders." Swift's decision, which comes just days after the election results, has left millions of fans reeling, with reactions ranging from outrage to applause. For red-state Swifties, it feels like heartbreak, while her blue-state followers are rallying around her decision as a bold stance for progressivism. That article also displayed a "satire" label. Further, the footer text at the bottom of the website read, "Welcome to SpaceXMania, your go-to source for the latest Parody news and hilarious satirical commentary. We want to emphasize that NOTHING ON THIS WEBSITE IS REAL! Enjoy Folks." Snopes has addressed other claims about Swift in the past, including the purportedly satirical assertion that she and musician Bruce Springsteen announced they would leave the U.S. should Trump win in 2024 and a false rumor that she had not donated any money to help victims of Hurricane Helene. For background, here is why we alert readers to rumors created by sources that call their output humorous or satirical.
