The claim that India has officially become the hottest nation on Earth is false. While several regions are experiencing extreme heat, no official data or declaration supports the viral claim.
To investigate the claim, we searched online and found numerous news reports on the hot summer, El Niño, and their impacts. However, we did not find any report or source specifically stating that India has officially become the hottest nation on Earth. If any such announcement had been made by an authorized official or organization, it would likely have been widely reported by prominent media outlets.
During a conversation with meteorological expert Mr. Biswajit Sahoo, a meteorologist at WeatherCast Solutions Pvt. Ltd., located within IIT Bombay in Mumbai, he said: "Many regions, such as Africa and the Gulf countries, have also recorded historically high temperatures. However, due to a lack of monitoring instruments, such as weather and observation stations, we often do not have access to their data.
Furthermore, when analysing weather maps that show peak temperatures in India, we sometimes overlook the impact of different time zones. For example, at 2:00 PM in India, it is still early morning in the Gulf region. Therefore, a single snapshot taken at 2:00 PM IST cannot accurately justify claims that India is hotter than countries experiencing a completely different time of day.
Undoubtedly, global temperatures have increased significantly over the past few years. This climate shift is not unique to India; it is a worldwide phenomenon."
On May 22, 2026, the Financial Express published a news article titled "Heatwave: 98 out of the world's 100 hottest cities in India." However, upon examining the list of cities mentioned in the report, we found that temperatures in those locations ranged between 42°C and 44°C. Not a single city recorded a temperature exceeding 50°C, let alone 55°C. Therefore, the claim that temperatures across India could surpass 55°C is not supported by the data presented in the report.
Hence, it proves the claim is false. Although many parts of India are facing extreme heat this summer, there is no official declaration that India has become the hottest nation on Earth. The viral claim exaggerates the situation and lacks credible weather data or official sources.
