Quick Take
A post on Instagram claims that an eyewash cup can cure eye problems through Netra Shuddhi. Our fact check terms it as mostly false.
The Claim
According to an Instagram user, an eyewash cup can cure eye problems. The post talks about an Ayurvedic technique called Netra Shuddhi.
Fact Check
What is Netra Shuddhi?
Netra Shuddhi or ‘eye cleansing‘, is an Ayurvedic technique that involves using natural substances to cleanse and refresh the eyes. It generally includes practices like washing the eyes with herbal decoctions. The technique uses an eyewash cup filled with herbal solutions, along with performing specific eye exercises. Proponents claim it can improve vision and treat various eye problems.
Can Netra Shuddhi cure eye problems?
No, there is no scientific evidence supporting the claim that Netra Shuddhi can cure eye problems. Ayurvedic practices have been used traditionally for various health issues. But, modern scientific studies validating their efficacy are lacking, particularly for serious eye conditions. Most eye conditions require specific treatments based on their underlying causes, which cannot be effectively addressed by Netra Shuddhi alone.
We reached out to Dr K Sivabalaji, Associate Professor, Dept of Shalakya Tantra, Amrita School of Ayurveda, Kollam, for his opinion on Netra Shuddhi. He says, “No, Netra Shuddhi can not cure eye problems, but it can reduce eye strain. The effect depends on the medication used for Netra Shuddhi. Also, it is important to maintain hygiene.”
We also checked with Dr Sahebaan Sabharwal Sethi, Ophthalmologist at Arunodaya Deseret Eye Hospital, Gurugram, regarding the widespread use of home remedies to remove spectacles. She says, “Herbal eye drops or home remedies cannot help you get rid of glasses. The need for glasses results from the size of the eyeball and the shape of the cornea, which cannot be altered by any eye drop or eye wash. On the other hand, acidic or extremely alkaline ingredients in herbal remedies can alter the normal pH of the eye and cause serious injuries or dryness. Can also lead to infections in case of unhygienic practices”
We also checked with another expert Dr. Isha Agarwalla, Ophthalmologist at Drishti Netralaya for her opinion on ‘natural remedies for eye problems’. She says, “Herbal or home remedies claiming to cure cataracts and other eye problems are spreading online, but beware: they’re often completely false. While some herbs or treatments may have minor benefits for eye health, they’re no match for proven medical treatments. Trusting in these unverified remedies could delay proper care and aggravate conditions. They may also lead to infections in the eye. Always consult with qualified medical professionals for accurate diagnosis and treatment options.”
Is it possible to improve eyesight at home?
Not really. Some home practices can help manage eye health, but they are unlikely to significantly improve eyesight or cure eye problems. General eye health can be supported through a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, regular eye exercises, adequate sleep, and protecting eyes from strain and UV light. However, substantial improvements in vision require medical interventions such as corrective lenses or surgeries. That too, under the supervision of an ophthalmologist.
What are the potential side effects of using eyewash cups?
Using eyewash cups without proper guidance or evidence may lead to side effects. Incorrect use can lead to:
- Irritation and Infection: Non-sterile solutions or improper handling can introduce bacteria, leading to eye infections.
- Damage to the Eye Surface: Aggressive or incorrect washing techniques can harm the cornea and conjunctiva.
- Delayed Medical Treatment: Relying on unproven methods may delay seeking proper medical care, worsening the condition.
Are there any proven natural methods to enhance eye health?
Yes to an extent, some at-home methods can enhance eye health. But, they are not cures for eye problems. These include:
- Balanced Diet: Consuming foods rich in vitamins A, C, E (Carrots, beetroots, oranges, and almonds) and omega-3 fatty acids (Salmon, Mackerel, chia seeds, and walnuts) supports eye health.
- Regular Eye Exercises: Techniques like the 20-20-20 rule (taking a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes) can reduce eye strain.
- Adequate Hydration and Sleep: Keeping hydrated and getting enough sleep are essential for maintaining overall eye health.
- Stop Smoking: Smoking increases the risk of Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetic retinopathy and Optic nerve damage.
- Wear Protective Glasses: Protect your eyes from the sun and harsh light.
What should you do if you have persistent eye problems?
If you have persistent eye problems, it is crucial to consult an ophthalmologist. An ophthalmologist can diagnose and treat eye conditions properly. Self-medicating or relying on unproven remedies may lead to complications and delay necessary medical care.
How effective are ayurvedic treatments for eye conditions?
Ayurvedic treatments might offer some relief for minor symptoms and contribute to overall eye comfort. But, they are not substitutes for conventional medical treatments. For serious eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, or retinal disorders, evidence-based medical care are needed.
To conclude, practices like Netra Shuddhi and using eyewash cups are rooted in traditional medicine. But, they lack the scientific backing needed to be considered reliable treatments for eye problems. Maintaining eye health through a balanced diet, proper eye care, and regular check-ups with an eye specialist is important. For any long-term or severe eye issues, we recommend you to seek professional medical advice.
